The Great "Eight Random Things" Blog Challenge

Arrgh. I've been "tagged" by my buddy Donna MacMeans (displaying a hitherto unsuspected streak of malicious glee) in the "8 Random Things" blogging thing that's going around.

So here are the rules:

1. Each player starts by posting eight random facts/habits about herself.

2. Make sure to post the rules of the game, too.

3. At the end of the post, the player has to "tag" eight people and post their names.

4. Don't forget to send an email to your eight "taggees" and let them know they've been tagged so they can read your blog.

Now that the rules have been laid out, I suppose I'll have to come up with eight random facts. Here goes:

1. I met my future husband at a well-attended business seminar in the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan. He likes to tell people he met me in a hotel room off Times Square.

2. By the time I was 21 years old, I had learned to speak Spanish, French, German and Italian in addition to my native English. None of this impressed the U.S. State Department when I applied to them for a job.  I went to law school instead.

3. In Tae Kwon Do competitions, the Adult category covers ages 18-33. I won my last gold medal a few months before I turned 34--I didn't want to compete in the Seniors category, for competitors aged 34-45.  If I were to compete again (not likely, folks) I'd be in the Masters category. Yeah, don't ask.

4.  While on a semester abroad in high school, I visited East Berlin for an afternoon. This was before the wall came down--compared to the lively neon lights and whizzing cars of West Berlin, communist-controlled East Berlin was gray, depressing and horribly industrial. The food was terrible, too.

5. I had a ton of fun acting in high school plays and community theater productions. I still think going to the theater is more fun than going to the movies.

6. When I was a teenager, my mother made a deal with me: I could wear anything I wanted as long as I sewed it myself--bell-bottoms, miniskirts, hot pants, whatever. If I wanted her to buy me an outfit, it had to be something she approved of. I did a lot of sewing in high school.

7. I have one green eye and one blue eye. The condition is called "heterochromia iridis," which is Latin for "two different-colored eyes."

8. I was named for my paternal grandmother Sarah and my maternal grandfather Leo. There were no Sara Lee cheescakes when I was born.

Whew! that took a lot of thinking! All right, now brace yourselves for the moment of truth...the eight taggees are:

Becky Barker

Jules Bennett

Cindy Carver

Paige Cuccaro

Tabitha Gibson

Toni Leland

Beth Morrow

Kay Stockham

DeNita Tuttle

Hope to see you posting soon, guys! I know you're all good sports.

Ok, I'll play, but no tagging. ;) Here goes:

1. I met my husband on AOL in a roleplaying chat room.

2. I'm a professional wrestling fan (WWE)

3. I love musicals! Oliver, The Sound of Music and West Side Story are a few of my favorites.

4. I keep a few baby naming books by my computer for character name inspirations. I pull them out in front of my mother just to get a rise out of her. ;)

5. I used to be a waitress for Denny's. Ahh the old days.

6. I sleep with socks on every night. Even during the summer! I'm afraid of stepping on or having a spider crawl across my bare feet.

7. I hate wrinkled towels! I must fold them asap or redry and fold them. I can't dry off with a wrinkled towel, it feels too weird. I also love to do laundry.

8. The host of Make Me Famous, Make Me Rich, the Ohio Lottery game show on Saturday evenings is a good friend of mine, David McCreary. He also a budding comedian and a fantastic magician. (You probably could rent him! LOL)

Thanks Saralee!

Hi, Saralee. I think I'm immune to the Eight Random Things tag because I started this round. I just dropped by to say hi and to thank you for sharing eight random things about yourself. Great list! Patricia

Hi, Saralee! This is a fun game, and I enjoyed reading your list and Tabitha's, too!

Here are 8 things about me:
1. I, too, have one blue eye and one green. The difference is subtle, but I used to wear a blue contact on my blue eye and a clear one on my green eye to play up the difference. ;-)

2. I, too, love musicals. {{waving at Tabitha!}} I've been listening to the vintage ones since I was a kid.

3. I'm very superstitious and have developed my own personal ones -- such as always having to put my right sock and shoe on before my left ones.

4. I once participated in a celebrity downhill ski race in Big Bear, CA.

5. I petted a dolphin last January in Key West, FL.

6. I've never been able to drink carbonated drinks, so I've saved a bundle by not buying soft drinks. Also, not drinking beer REALLY helped me in college, since the U. of VA is/was a major drinking school.

7. I gave up drinking coffee in 1986, but I started drinking a caffeinated drink called yerbe mate last year, so I'm addicted to caffeine again.

8. My wedding was covered by People Magazine, since I asked guests to donate to charity vs. giving my husband and me presents.

I'm leaving for Vegas tomorrow, so I won't be tagging anyone. But this is a great blog game to play!

Saralee -

I can see how your theater experience is reflected in your books. Do you find it helpful in describing your characters, or feeling their reactions?

Glad to see you've enjoyed the tagging experience :) guess I can show my face at the COFW meeting on Saturday.

Hi, Donna! Yes, I'll be happy to see your smiling face at our meeting. :)
I do indeed draw on that theatrical background in my work--I want to show what it's like to be on the other side of the proscenium arch, the experience of performing and all the emotions that go along with it.
So many stories that I read only show actors and actresses before or after a performance, and not what it's like to actually be *in* it. That's what's fascinating to me. I think anyone who has done any public speaking (including giving presentations in school) is at least a bit familiar with the sensations that an actor would feel, so it's something most people can relate to.
Thanks for asking!
